Selected in the fourth round (No. 99) of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators, Saros developed in Liiga, the top pro league in his native Finland, and the American Hockey League before joining the Nashville Predators.
Playing for HPK in Finland, he was 17-16-9 with seven shutouts, a 1.76 goals-against average in 44 games in 2013-14. He followed that with six shutouts and a 2.14 goals-against average in 2014-15.
Saros then made the transition to North America during the 2015-16 season and dominated with Nashville's AHL affiliate in Milwaukee. In 38 games, he was 29-8-0 with a 2.24 GAA, .920 save percentage and two shutouts.
Saros made his NHL debut on Nov. 28, 2015, allowing three goals on 23 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. He played most of the 2016-17 season with Nashville as Pekka Rinne's backup. Saros made 34 saves against the Pittsburgh Penguins for his first NHL win on Oct. 22, 2016, and earned his first NHL shutout on Dec. 30, 2016, against the St. Louis Blues. He finished the season 10-8-3 with a 2.35 GAA and .923 save percentage in 21 games (19 starts).
His excellent play carried over into the 2017-18 season, when he made 26 starts and was 11-5-7 with a 2.44 GAA, .923 save percentage and three shutouts. Saros set a Predators record for most saves (46) in a shutout in a 4-0 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 14. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie team in 2017-18, and the Predators signed him to a three-year contract July 16, 2018.
Saros became Nashville's No. 1 goalie after Rinne retired from the NHL on July, 13, 2021. He then went 2-4 with a 2.78 GAA and .921 save percentage in six games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when the Predators were eliminated from the best-of-7 Stanley Cup First Round by the Carolina Hurricanes. He signed a four-year contract with the Predators on Aug. 17, 2021, an average annual value of $5 million. Saros was a restricted free agent and avoided a salary arbitration hearing scheduled.
The investment paid off for the Predators when Saros went 38-25-3 with a 2.64 GAA, .918 save percentage and four shutouts in 2021-22 to become a finalist for the Vezina Trophy given to the best goalie in the NHL. He made a team-record 64 saves in a 5-3 win at the Hurricanes on Jan. 5, 2023, becoming the fourth goalie at the time with at least 64 saves in a regular-season game since 1955-56, joining Ron Tugnutt (70 on March 21, 1991), Mario Lessard (65 on March 24, 1981) and Joe Daley (64 on Dec. 10, 1970).
Saros signed an eight-year, $61.92 million contract with the Predators on July 1, 2024. He won a bronze medal with Team Finland at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, where he was the only goalie to play every minute for his team (360:27) and had a 1.66 GAA and .940 save percentage.
