Hammond, known as "The Hamburglar," stole the spotlight as a rookie during the 2014-15 season with the Ottawa Senators.
The nickname, a reference to the McDonald's character of the same name, stuck while the goaltender was at Bowling Green University. The name plays off the beginning of Hammond's name and the fact that his college teammates felt he was stealing wins for them.
The nickname resurfaced when Hammond went on a historic run after being pressed into action when the Senators' two other goalies, Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner, were hit with injuries.
The White Rock, British Columbia, product, who made one relief appearance in 2013-14 but did not get a decision, won his first start, a 4-2 victory against the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 18, 2015. Two games later, following another victory, he got his first shutout, making 25 saves in a 3-0 win against the Anaheim Ducks, then followed that with 35 saves in a shutout of the Los Angeles Kings.
Hammond would go 10-1-1 to start his career and become the second goalie to allow two or fewer goals in each of his first NHL 12 starts. Only Boston's Frank "Mr. Zero" Brimsek had done it, in 1938-39.
