Dell announced his retirement from professional hockey Sept. 4, 2025.
The 36-year-old undrafted goalie played seven seasons in the NHL for the San Jose Sharks, New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. He was 50-50-13 with a 2.92 goals-against average, .905 save percentage and five shutouts in 130 regular-season games (106 starts) and had a 3.08 GAA and .891 save percentage in four Stanley Cup Playoff games. He last played in the League for the Sharks when he made 25 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at SAP Center on Feb. 14, 2023. He played the remainder of his career in the American Hockey League and the ECHL, appearing in 10 games for San Jose of the AHL in 2024-25.
Despite a record-setting NCAA career at North Dakota, Dell was passed over in the NHL Draft. That didn't keep him from working his way up the hockey ladder to the NHL.
The native of Airdrie, Alberta, played three seasons at North Dakota. He left after the 2011-12 season with a 49-20-5 record, 2.15 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. As a sophomore, he led the nation in wins (30) and GAA (1.79). He was named MVP of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament in 2011-12.
When no NHL team came calling, Dell turned pro with Allen of the Central Hockey League in 2012-13 and was named the CHL's most outstanding goaltender after leading the league in GAA (2.30). He also helped Allen to the Presidents' Cup title that season.
Dell played for Utah of the ECHL and Abbotsford and Worcester of the American Hockey League before signing with the Sharks as a free agent March 4, 2015.
He continued his strong play during the 2015-16 AHL season, finishing tied for fourth in the league with a .922 save percentage and tied for sixth with four shutouts. Dell earned his first NHL callup Feb. 27, 2016 and dressed for two games as a backup to Martin Jones but saw no action.
That changed in 2016-17, when he became the regular backup to Jones. Dell was 36-19-9 during the next three seasons with a 2.64 GAA and .909 save percentage.
