The Dallas Stars selected Smith, a center from Toronto, in the fourth round (No. 104) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
Smith played midget hockey for Markham and North York of the Greater Toronto Major Midget Hockey League before Owen Sound took him with the No. 120 pick in the 2010 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. He had 60 points (21 goals, 39 assists) during his second full season in Owen Sound, attracting the attention of the Stars.
Smith signed a three-year contract with Dallas on May 31, 2014, after concluding his OHL career in London. He played most of the next three seasons for Texas of the American Hockey League, but was called up by Dallas and made his NHL debut on Oct. 22, 2016. In his seventh NHL game, Smith scored his first two goals to help the Stars to a 4-3 overtime win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 6, 2016.
Smith signed a one-year contract with the Stars on July 11, 2017, and had 11 points (six goals, five assists) in 46 games in 2017-18, using his speed effectively in limited ice time (9:26 per game).
