Murray joined the Edmonton Oilers when he signed a one-year, $750,000 contract Sept. 2, 2022. His four assists in 37 regular-season games helped the eventual Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche earn 119 points in the regular season, most in the Western Conference.
Selected by the Blue Jackets with the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, Murray scored 121 points (22 goals, 99 assists) in 191 games with Everett of the Western Hockey League.
Murray scored 21 points (four goals, 17 assists) during his rookie season of 2013-14 and ranked eighth among first-year defensemen in blocked shots (94). He tied for third in power-play goals (three) and for fifth in power-play points (seven).
After an injury-riddled second season that limited Murray to 12 games in 2014-15, he led the Blue Jackets with 171 blocked shots and scored 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) in 82 games in 2015-16. Murray signed a two-year contract with Columbus on Feb. 11, 2016.
Injuries have limited Murray since; he hasn't played 60 games in a season after 2016-17. He scored 29 points (one goal, 28 assists) in 56 games in 2018-19 but was unable to return for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
On the international stage, Murray helped Canada finish third at the 2012 World Junior Championship.
