You might say hockey runs in the family for Charlie Coyle.
A native of Weymouth, Massachusetts, Coyle counts former NHL players Tony Amonte and Bobby Sheehan among his cousins.
Even with that pedigree -- Amonte scored 416 goals and 900 points during his 15 NHL seasons while Sheehan was a third-round pick (No. 32) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1969 NHL Draft -- Coyle has had no trouble making his own name.
Coyle, who was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the first round (No. 28) of the 2010 NHL Draft, would, like Amonte, go on to play at Boston University. As a freshman in 2010-11, Coyle had 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists) in 37 games while also helping the United States win the bronze medal at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Coyle was traded to the Minnesota Wild on June 24, 2011, with Devin Setoguchi and San Jose's first-round pick (Zack Phillips) in 2011 NHL Draft for Brent Burns and Minnesota's second-round pick (later traded to Tampa Bay, which traded it to Nashville, which selected Pontus Aberg) in 2012 NHL Draft.
The following season, Coyle played 16 games for the Terriers before playing for Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he had 38 points (15 goals, 23 assists) in 23 games.
After playing half the 2012-13 season with Houston in the American Hockey League, Coyle made his NHL debut against the Phoenix Coyotes on Feb. 4, 2013. As a rookie, he averaged just over 15 minutes per game (15:04) and had 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in 37 games to help Minnesota reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in five seasons.
Coyle played the following two season mostly as a center before switching to right wing in December 2015. That season, his fourth in the League, he scored a career-high 21 goals and had 42 points.
Following three more seasons with the Wild, Coyle was traded to the Boston Bruins on Feb. 20, 2019, for Ryan Donato and a conditional pick in 2019 NHL Draft. After getting six points (two goals, four assists) in 21 regular-season games, Coyle had 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 24 playoff games to help Boston advance to the Stanley Cup Final, a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Blues.
Coyle signed a six-year, $31.5 million contract with the Bruins on Nov. 27, 2019. He stepped up in 2023-24 with what were NHL career-highs in goals (25), assists (35) and points (60), Boston's first season after the retirements of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejcí that included his first NHL hat trick in a 5-2 win against the New York Islanders on Nov. 9. He had two hits in 18:03 of ice time in his 900th NHL game, a 4-3 victory at the Calgary Flames on Dec. 17, 2024.
He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche on March 7, 2025, and sent to the Columbus Blue Jackets on June 27, 2025. He signed a six-year, $36 million contract (average annual value of $6 million) with the Blue Jackets on May 12, 2026, after tying his NHL career high of 38 assists and scoring at least 20 goals for the third time in the League.
