Championship
Orlov is a mobile, physical, offense-minded defenseman who's versatile enough to do just about anything asked of him on the ice, as he showed while helping the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup in 2018. He contributed offensively (eight points; two goals, six assists), finished plus-5 and played in all situations averaging 24:12 of ice time in 24 games.
A second-round pick (No. 55) by Washington in the 2009 NHL Draft, Orlov made his debut with the Capitals near the end of the 2010-11 season. His arrival was worth the wait.
Before coming to North America, he had helped Russia win the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2011, earning all-tournament honors after scoring a goal and nine points in seven games.
Following his season with Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the Kontinental Hockey League in 2010-11, Orlov joined the Capitals and was assigned to Hershey of the American Hockey League. He finished with nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 19 games.
Orlov appeared to make a breakthrough in 2011-12, appearing in 60 games with Washington, but injuries slowed him the following season, when he played in five NHL games.
After appearing in 54 games with Washington in 2013-14, Orlov broke his wrist playing for Russia at the IIHF 2014 World Championship and had pins inserted during surgery. He had the pins removed in July 2014 but developed an infection that set back his rehabilitation. Orlov ended up missing the entire 2014-15 NHL season.
He returned for 2015-16, making the opening-night roster and finally showcasing his game for a full NHL season. He played in all 82 games and had eight goals and 29 points. Orlov also was Washington's nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player best exemplifying "perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey."
Orlov scored 10 goals during the 2017-18 season before helping the Capitals win the Cup. He played for Washington, the Minnesota Wild and the Boston Bruins in the 2022-23 season, and signed a two-year, $31 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 1, 2023. He signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the San Jose Sharks on July 3, 2025.
