Growing up in Caledon, Ontario, Holland was not your ordinary Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He worked on his shot in the basement of his family's home, which was equipped with boards and Plexiglas and adorned with the painted likenesses of former Maple Leafs players such as Mats Sundin and Tie Domi.

Holland would end up joining his hometown team after the Anaheim Ducks traded him to Toronto on Nov. 16, 2013, with Brad Staubitz for Jesse Blacker and a second- and seventh-round 2014 pick.

After a solid major-junior career (103 goals, 258 points in 256 games) with Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League, Holland was selected by the Ducks in the first round (No. 15) of the 2009 NHL Draft.

Holland made his NHL debut with the Ducks on Nov. 5, 2011, against the Detroit Red Wings. He got his first NHL goal six days later, scoring the game-winner against Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks.

Holland played four League games in 2011-12 and split the next two seasons between the NHL and the American Hockey League. He became an NHL regular with Toronto in 2014-15, reaching double figures in goals (11) and assists (15) for the first time.

Holland had four multipoint games that season and scored the first shorthanded goal of his NHL career, Nov. 8, 2014, against the New York Rangers.

He represented Canada at the 2009 Under-18 World Championship, getting a goal and five points in six games. In 2015 Holland was among the local sports figures who carried the torch when the Pan American Games relay came through Caledon.
