Stone announced his retirement from the NHL on July 5, 2023, after playing 12 seasons and 552 regular-season games. He accepted a role with the Calgary Flames as a member of their player development team.

Stone finished his NHL career with 145 points (41 goals, 104 assists.. He was a defenseman equipped with NHL size (6-3, 210 pounds) and a fairly steady point producer with a potent point shot and solid all-around game.

He played four seasons with Calgary of the Western Hockey League. In 2007-08, Stone scored 10 goals and 35 points and was selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the third round (No. 69) in the 2008 NHL Draft.

Stone's 61 points put him fourth among WHL defensemen in scoring in 2008-09, and he added 13 points in 18 playoff games as Calgary advanced to the WHL final.

Stone's farewell junior season in 2009-10 was also his most productive one. He was selected a finalist for the WHL Eastern Conference Defenseman of the Year and was named to the WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star Team after picking up 21 goals and 65 points in 69 games.

During the playoffs, Stone led all defensemen with 20 points in 23 games as Calgary won the WHL title. Calgary advanced to the Memorial Cup, where Stone played against his brother, Brandon forward Mark Stone.

Stone recorded two goals and 13 points in 70 games with San Antonio of the American Hockey League as he entered the pro ranks in 2010-11. Stone played 51 games Portland of the AHL in 2011-12 and also made his NHL debut, playing 13 games for the Coyotes and scoring one goal and three points.

His first NHL game was Feb. 18, 2012, against the Dallas Stars. Stone's first NHL point was an assist March 8, 2012, against the Minnesota Wild. Two nights later he scored his first NHL goal in a 3-0 victory against the San Jose Sharks, part of a two-point night for Stone. He also made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut May 15, 2012, in the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Kings.

Stone scored nine points in 40 games for the Coyotes in 2012-13 and also played 36 games for Portland. In 2013-14, Stone finished tied for second among Coyotes defensemen in goals (eight) and blocked shots (114). He posted his first two-goal game in the NHL Nov. 14, 2013, against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Stone was one of four NHL defensemen with over 150 hits and 150 blocked shots in 2014-15, finishing fifth in the league with 189 blocked shots and 13th among defensemen with 202 hits.

He had back-to-back multipoint games for the first time in his NHL career March 12-17, 2016, and finished the season second among Arizona defensemen in assists (30) and points (36). Stone also led the team with 143 blocked shots.
