Fayne picked up pointers from some of the best after being selected by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round (No. 155) in the 2005 NHL Draft.
Fayne learned from Hall of Fame defensemen Larry Robinson and Scott Stevens, former coaches with the Devils, and Hall of Fame center Jacques Lemaire, who was the Devils head coach for part of 2010-11, Fayne's first season in New Jersey.
The 6-foot-3, 212-pound defenseman, who grew up in Bourne, Mass., idolizing Boston Bruins icon Ray Bourque, played four seasons for Hockey East Conference powerhouse Providence College. He spent 19 games in the minor leagues with the Devils' American Hockey League affiliate in Albany, N.Y., before solidifying his spot on the Devils roster in 2010-11.
He was able to do so because the Devils' defensive corps was hit hard by injuries that season, and because his make-the-simple-play approach was a good fit with New Jersey's system. The mentoring from Robinson, Stevens and Lemaire had plenty to do with his development, as did the help Fayne received from Henrik Tallinder and Andy Greene, his defense partners for much of his rookie season.
Fayne quickly found himself lining up against opponents' top lines. He played 57 games as a rookie, then played all 82 games the next season, getting 17 points and finishing fourth on the Devils in blocked shots with 88.
With his big body and ability to make a good first pass and read the play, he drew the attention of the Edmonton Oilers, who signed him to a four-year free agent contract on July 1, 2014. In his first season in Edmonton, he led the Oilers with 125 blocked shots in 74 games.
