Comeau was born in Vancouver and raised in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. He was selected by the New York Islanders in the second round (No. 47) of the 2004 NHL Draft. Having played in the Memorial Cup three times with Kelowna of the Western Hockey League, winning it once, the forward arrived in the NHL with a blistering shot, good speed and strong offensive instincts.
From 2006-09, Comeau split time between Bridgeport of the American Hockey League and the Islanders. He made his NHL debut against the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 7, 2006, the first of three games with New York that season.
Comeau was recalled by the Islanders in late 2007 and scored his first NHL goal in his second game up, getting the game-winner and an assist in a 4-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 21. Comeau gradually earned more trust; after averaging just more than 10 minutes of ice time over his first 40 games of 2007-08, Comeau averaged 16:32 in his final 11 games.
A full-time NHL player beginning in 2009-10, Comeau was fourth on the Islanders in goals with 17, including three against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 2, 2010, for his first NHL hat trick, Comeau again finished fourth on the Islanders with 24 goals in 77 games.
Comeau was claimed off waivers by the Calgary Flames on Nov. 25, 2011. He played two seasons with the Flames, who traded him to the Columbus Blue Jackets on April 3, 2013. Comeau got his first taste of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with Columbus in 2013-14. He played in all six games of the Blue Jackets' first-round loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, finishing with 34 hits in the postseason.
He would soon bring his hard-hitting style to the Penguins and then the Colorado Avalanche. Comeau also scored timely goals while with Pittsburgh; he tied for the team lead with five game-winning goals in 2014-15 and scored his first playoff goal in Game 1 of the Penguins' first-round series loss to the New York Rangers.
After scoring 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists) in two seasons with Colorado, Comeau signed a three-year contract as a free agent with the Dallas Stars on July 1, 2018.
