A first-round pick (No. 26) at the 2004 NHL Draft, Schneider played three seasons for Boston College and was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2005. He was named to the conference's Second All-Star Team and the NCAA East First All-American Team in 2006, when he had a .930 save percentage and a 2.03 goals-against average in 37 games.
Schneider played his first three professional seasons mostly with Manitoba of the American Hockey League but made his NHL debut against the Calgary Flames on Nov. 29, 2008 and got his first win against the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 5. In eight NHL games, he went 2-4-1 with a 3.38 GAA and an .877 save percentage.
He joined the NHL full-time in 2010-11 as Roberto Luongo's backup and helped the Canucks reach the Stanley Cup Final. In 25 regular-season games, Schneider went 16-4-2 with a 2.23 GAA and a .929 save percentage.
After spending the first five seasons of his NHL career backing up Roberto Luongo with the Vancouver Canucks and another season sharing the goaltending duties with Martin Brodeur with the New Jersey Devils, Schneider finally moved out of the role of apprentice with the Devils in 2014-15.
Schneider played another two seasons with the Canucks and was traded to the Devils on June 30, 2013. He signed a seven-year contract with New Jersey on July 9.
He split the goalie duties with Martin Brodeur during the 2013-14 season and had a 1.97 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 45 games (43 starts). But Schneider started 68 games in 2014-15, 58 in 2015-16 and 59 in 2016-17, cementing himself as the new No. 1 in New Jersey.
Despite Schneider's reliability and solid numbers, he and the Devils did not qualify for the playoffs until the 2017-18 season. He missed much of the second half because of a groin injury but played three games in the Eastern Conference First Round series loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Schneider had a 1.78 GAA and a .950 save percentage.
Schneider had hip surgery after the season and was limited to 26 NHL games in 2018-19. He split the 2019-20 season between New Jersey and Binghamton of the AHL.
On the international stage, Schneider represented the United States at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2005 and 2006.
