Tough, reliable and courageous, Laich is a two-way forward straight out of central casting, a so-called "glue guy" with character and energy. Fittingly for such a hard worker, he is a native of Wawota, Saskatchewan, whose town motto is "Progress Through Perseverance."
After scoring 41 goals and 94 points in 2002-03 for Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League and winning a silver medal with Canada at the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championship, Laich was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the sixth round (No. 193) of the 2003 NHL Draft.
Laich appeared in one game for the Senators, making his NHL debut Feb. 3, 2004, against the New Jersey Devils, though he did have 15 goals and 33 points that season for Binghamton, the Senators' American Hockey League affiliate. On Feb 18, 2004, Laich was traded with a 2005 second-round draft pick to the Washington Capitals for Peter Bondra.
Laich appeared in four games that season for the Capitals, getting an assist in his Washington debut March 12, 2004, against the Chicago Blackhawks. He played 22 games for Portland of the AHL in 2003-04.
Laich secured a regular spot with the Capitals in 2005-06, when he had seven goals and 21 points in 73 games after an early call-up from Hershey of the AHL. He scored his first two NHL goals in back-to-back games (Nov. 19, 2005, against the Montreal Canadiens and Nov. 22, 2005, against the Pittsburgh Penguins). Laich rejoined Hershey for the playoffs that season, scoring eight goals and 15 points in 21 games and helping it win the Calder Cup.
He would be a fixture with the Capitals for more than a decade. Although he had three straight 20-goal seasons for Washington from 2007-2010, he did more than score. Among Capitals forwards he was first in blocked shots (56) in 2007-08 and first with an average of 21.7 shifts per game in 2008-09.
On Feb. 28, 2016, the Capitals traded Laich, Connor Carrick and a 2016 second-round draft pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Daniel Winnik and a fifth-round pick in 2016. The "glue guy" became part of a rebuilding effort where his work ethic could be an example to young players.
