Top Goaltender
Miller can be counted among the best goaltenders of his generation, and his play was never better than during the 2009-10 NHL season.
In that highlight-reel year, Miller accounted for all but four of the Buffalo Sabres' goaltending wins, going 41-18-8 with .929 save percentage and a 2.22 goals-against average.
In February, he helped the United States win a silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The championship game ended on Sidney Crosby's overtime goal for Canada, but Miller was named the tournament's MVP.
At season's end, there were more accolades. He won the Vezina Trophy and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team.
Miller's excellence had been hinted at during a stellar collegiate career. During his three seasons at Michigan State, the East Lansing, Michigan, native had an NCAA-record 26 shutouts, won the 2001 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college hockey and had GAAs of 1.53, 1.32 and 1.77.
Selected by the Sabres in the fifth round (No. 138) of the 1999 NHL Draft, Miller leapfrogged Martin Biron to become the Sabres' undisputed No. 1 goaltender in 2005-06 and never played fewer than 40 games a season in Buffalo after that. He left the Sabres leader in games (540) and wins (284), and had five seasons of 30 or more wins and twice had 40 or more.
On Feb. 28, 2014, Miller was traded to the St. Louis Blues, but after they lost in the Western Conference First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Chicago Blackhawks, Miller became an unrestricted free agent. He signed a three-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks on July 1, 2014.
On Oct. 28, 2014, Miller became the 30th goalie in NHL history to win 300 games when the Canucks defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1.
After three seasons in Vancouver, Miller signed a two-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks on July 1, 2017 and agreed to return for a third season June 20, 2019. He won his 375th game in the NHL by defeating the Washington Capitals 5-2 at Honda Center on Feb. 10, 2019, passing John Vanbiesbrouck for most by a United States-born goalie.
He announced April 29, 2021 he would retire following the 2020-21 season. His final game was a 4-3 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on May 8.
