An innocent-looking trade of a backup goalie turned Kiprusoff's NHL career around.
The San Jose Sharks selected the native of Turku, Finland, in the fifth round (No. 116) of the 1995 NHL Draft, but Kiprusoff didn't come to North America until 1999 and didn't make his NHL debut until Oct. 24, 2000, when he made a relief appearance against the Carolina Hurricanes.
His first NHL win was also in relief, when he stopped 12 of 13 shots in 40:53 on March 29, 2001 against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. His first NHL start came April 8, also against the Ducks.
Kiprusoff struggled in a backup role for the next two seasons, then lost the No. 2 job to Vesa Toskala before the 2003-04 season. But his career took on a new life after the Calgary Flames lost goalie Roman Turek to injury early in the season. They needed a goalie and traded for Kiprusoff on Nov. 16, 2003.
The trade paid quick dividends for the Flames. He made 22 saves in a 2-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens four days later and finished 24-10 with four ties, a 1.70 goals-against average, .933 save percentage and four shutouts, helping Calgary return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 1996.
Kiprusoff carried the Flames within one win of the Stanley Cup before they lost 2-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the Final. He finished 15-11, with a 1.85 GAA, .928 save percentage and five shutouts.
Kiprusoff played in Sweden during the 2004-05 lockout but returned to the Flames in 2005-06 and finished 42-20-11 with a 2.07 GAA, .923 save percentage and 10 shutouts. He was voted winner of the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goalie and won the Jennings Trophy because the Flames allowed the fewest goals in the League.
The 2005-06 season began a streak of seven seasons that saw Kiprusoff win at least 35 games. His NHL career high came in 2008-09, when he led the NHL with 45 victories. He was also among the NHL's busiest goalies during those seven seasons, starting at least 68 games in each.
Kiprusoff and the Flames were unable to repeat the postseason success they had in 2004. They lost in the first round each season from 2005-06 through 2008-09, then missed the playoffs in each of Kiprusoff's final four NHL seasons.
Kiprusoff got his 300th NHL win Feb. 8, 2012, when the Flames defeated the Sharks, and got his 300th victory as a member of the Flames on March 6, 2013, also against the Sharks. He announced his retirement on Sept. 9, 2013, finishing his NHL career 319-213-64, with seven ties, a 2.49 GAA, .912 save percentage and 44 shutouts. In the playoffs, he was 25-28, with a 2.32 GAA, .921 save percentage and six shutouts. Kiprusoff retired as Calgary's all-time leader in wins (305) and shutouts (41).
