Vokoun went from a ninth-round pick (No. 226) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1994 NHL Draft to a 300-game winner who played 15 seasons in the League.
The Czech Republic native's NHL career began on a low note: Vokoun made his NHL debut in relief for the Canadiens against the Philadelphia Flyers on Feb. 6, 1997, and allowed four goals on 14 shots in one period.
Montreal exposed Vokoun in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft, and he was selected by the Nashville Predators. He established himself in the League during the next four seasons and became the starter after the Predators traded Mike Dunham in 2002.
Vokoun earned his first of two trips to the NHL All-Star Game in 2003-04, when he helped Nashville qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time. He had an NHL career-high 36 wins in 2005-06, but his season was cut short when he was diagnosed with a blood-clotting issue in his pelvis that kept him out of the playoffs. Vokoun was cleared to resume his career after the season, but a broken thumb limited him to 44 games in 2006-07.
The Predators traded Vokoun to the Florida Panthers on June 22, 2007. He was selected to the All-Star Game for the second time in 2008 and though he had a save percentage of .923 during his four seasons with the Panthers, they failed to qualify for the playoffs during that time.
The Washington Capitals signed Vokoun to a one-year contract on July 2, 2011. He won 25 games during the regular season, but the Capitals went with goalie Braden Holtby during the playoffs and traded Vokoun to the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 4, 2012. Vokoun backed up Marc-Andre Fleury during the regular season, going 13-4-0 in 20 appearances, but stepped in after Fleury struggled in the first round of the playoffs and had a 2.01 goals-against average in 11 games, helping the Penguins reach the Eastern Conference Final.
In September 2013, Vokoun had surgery to dissolve a blood clot in his pelvis. He played two games for Pittsburgh's American Hockey League affiliate in 2013-14 and announced his retirement on Dec. 15, 2014, finishing 300-288-43 with 35 ties, a 2.55 GAA, .917 save percentage and 51 shutouts in 700 games. He was 9-13 with a 2.24 GAA, .928 save percentage and two shutouts in 22 playoff games.
Vokoun also had success internationally, helping the Czech Republic finish first at the IIHF World Championship in 2005 and 2010, win a bronze medal at the 2006 Torino Olympics and finish third at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
