MacLean's NHL career included three consecutive 40-goal seasons and winning the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1995. But the most memorable goal of his career involved neither of those.
The Devils selected MacLean, a forward from Oshawa, Ontario, in the first round (No. 6) of the 1983 NHL Draft, following their first season in New Jersey after moving from Colorado. He was in the NHL before the end of the 1983-84 season and went through growing pains along with his teammates until April 3, 1988, when his overtime goal in New Jersey's regular-season finale against the Chicago Blackhawks put the Devils into the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since relocating.
He then scored 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 20 games, helping the Devils get to Game 7 of the Wales Conference Final before losing to the Boston Bruins.
MacLean followed that with his three 40-goal seasons, including an NHL career-high 45 in 1990-91. However, he missed all of the 1991-92 season because of a knee injury sustained during a preseason game.
He returned in 1992-93 and scored 24 goals, then scored 37 in 1993-94, again helping the Devils get within one game of the Stanley Cup Final before losing Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final to the New York Rangers. But in 1995, MacLean played a big role in helping the Devils win their first championship since entering the NHL as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974, scoring five goals and 18 points in 20 games.
MacLean scored 20 and 29 goals in the next two seasons, but after starting slowly in 1996-97, he was traded to the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 7, 1997. MacLean helped the Sharks advance to the playoffs in 1998, then signed with the Rangers on July 22, 1998. He played two seasons for the Rangers and two with the Dallas Stars before announcing his retirement June 7, 2002. MacLean scored 413 goals and 842 points in 1,194 NHL games, and 83 points (35 goals, 48 assists) in 104 playoff games.
After retiring, MacLean returned to the Devils as an assistant and earned a second Stanley Cup ring in 2003. He was named coach June 17, 2010 but was fired after the Devils started 9-22-2. He remained in the NHL as an assistant with the Carolina Hurricanes and Arizona Coyotes.
