McLean played 11 of his 16 NHL seasons with the Vancouver Canucks and helped them get within one win of the Stanley Cup in 1994.
The New Jersey Devils selected McLean, a goalie from Willowdale, Ontario, in the sixth round (No. 107) of the 1984 NHL Draft, following his first season with Oshawa of the Ontario Hockey League. He returned to Oshawa but made his NHL debut against the New York Islanders on April 5, 1986.
He played most of the 1986-87 season with Maine of the American Hockey League, then was traded to the Canucks on Sept. 15, 1987. By 1989-90, McLean was Vancouver's No. 1 goalie and led the League with 38 wins in 1991-92, when he was named an NHL Second-Team All-Star.
McLean won 28 games in 1992-93 and 23 in 1993-94. But in the 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he helped carry the Canucks to the Final for the second time in their history, going 15-9 with a 2.29 goals-against average, .928 save percentage and a playoff-leading four shutouts. The Canucks trailed the Rangers 3-1 in the Final but won Game 5 and 6 before a 3-2 loss in Game 7.
McLean didn't win more than 21 games in each of the next three seasons and was traded by the Canucks to the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 3, 1998.
His time in Carolina was brief; he went 4-2-0 in eight games before being traded to the Florida Panthers on March 24, 1998. McLean played 30 games as Sean Burke's backup in 1998-99, then backed up Mike Richter, the goalie he lost against in Game 7 of the 1994 Cup Final, for two seasons with the Rangers before retiring in 2001.
McLean finished his NHL career 245-262 with 72 ties, a 3.26 goals-against average, .887 save percentage and 22 shutouts. In the playoffs, he was 34-34 with a 2.84 GAA, .907 save percentage and six shutouts.
