MVP of Regular Season
Though it's difficult enough to excel at one position in the NHL, Siebert was a standout left wing and defenseman throughout his 14 seasons in the League.
He began his NHL career in 1925-26 as a forward with the Montreal Maroons, scoring 16 goals and helping them win the Stanley Cup. He played left wing on a line with Hooley Smith and Nels Stewart. "The S Line" remained intact until the Maroons traded Siebert to the New York Rangers on July 2, 1932.
Siebert was the muscle on the line, suspended more than once for his rugged play. He also blossomed as a goal scorer and had an NHL career-high 21 goals and 39 points in 48 games during his final season with the Maroons. Though his production dipped with the Rangers, he helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1933. But a trade to the Boston Bruins on Dec. 18, 1933 helped rejuvenate his career.
With top defenseman Eddie Shore suspended, the Bruins had Siebert switch positions. And when Shore returned, he played with Siebert on the top defense pair for Boston. In 1935-36, Siebert was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team at the position. He scored 12 goals, had 21 points and was a stalwart in his own end of the ice.
Despite Siebert's success, the Bruins traded him to the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 10, 1936. He was named captain and won the Hart Trophy voted as the most valuable player in the NHL.
Siebert retired as a player after the 1938-39 season and was named coach of the Canadiens. However, he never had the chance to coach a game. Siebert drowned at Lake Huron on Aug. 25, 1939 while trying to retrieve an inflatable tire his two daughters were playing with.
The NHL organized an All-Star Game benefit to raise money for Siebert's widow, who was paraplegic, and children. The game was Oct. 29, 1939 and featured a team of NHL All-Stars playing against the Canadiens at the Montreal Forum. It raised more than $15,000 for Siebert's family.
Siebert was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1964.
