Sportsmanship and Gentlemanly Conduct
Hubert George ìBillî Quackenbush was considered a great offensive defenseman during his 14 NHL seasons. He played his first seven with the Detroit Red Wings starting in 1942-43 and final seven seasons with the Boston Bruins, scoring 285 points (62 goals, 223 assists) in 775 NHL games.
He went to the Stanley Cup Final with the Red Wings in 1945, 1948 and 1949 and with the Bruins in 1953.
Quackenbush was a very disciplined player. In 1949, while with the Red Wings, Quackenbush became the first defenseman to win the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, given annually to the NHL player judged to ìexhibit the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.î Quackenbush played 131 consecutive games without drawing a penalty, from late in the 1947-48 regular season through the playoffs and the first 45 games of the 1949-50 season. He had 95 career penalty minutes in 775 NHL games.
After retiring as a player in 1956, Quackenbush earned an associate degree in engineering at Northeastern University. He would later coach three varsity sports at the University of Princeton. He was menís hockey coach from 1967-73, and menís golf coach from 1971-85; with the golf team he went 154-51 and led it to eight Ivy League titles. He was Princetonís first varsity womenís hockey team coach from 1979-85, leading the team to three consecutive Ivy League championships from 1982-84.
Quackenbush was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976. He died on Sept. 12, 1999 at age 77.
