Dick Duff, a native of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, played for five teams over 19 NHL seasons from 1954-1972 and won the Stanley Cup six times -- twice with the Toronto Maple Leafs and four with the Montreal Canadiens.
A forward, Duff had 572 points (283 goals, 289 assists) in 1,030 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs, Canadiens, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres, and 79 points (30 goals, 49 assists) in 114 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Duff made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs on March 10, 1955 after three seasons at the junior level with the St. Mike's Majors. He became a full-time player for Toronto the following season as a 19-year-old and had 37 points (18 goals, 19 assists) in 69 regular-season games and five points (one goal, four assists) in five playoff games.
He became a model of consistently in the mid-1950s, scoring 26 goals in back-to-back seasons (1956-58) and an NHL career-high 29 in 1958-59. But Duff's most important contributions arguably came in the spring of 1962, when he had 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 12 playoff games, including the Stanley Cup-winning goal against the Chicago Black Hawks on April 22 of that year to give the Maple Leafs their first championship since 1951.
Duff and the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup again the following season, which saw him score two goals in the first 1:08 of Game 1 in the Cup Final against the Detroit Red Wings on April 9, 1963.
But Duff would play for two more teams by the end of 1964. He was traded to the Rangers on Feb. 22 of that year as part of a seven-player transaction and moved again to the Canadiens for forward Billy Hicke on Dec. 22.
That second trade would lead Duff to four more Stanley Cup championships with the Canadiens in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. He had 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 14 playoff games for Montreal during that fourth championship run.
Duff's rights were sold to Los Angeles during the 1969-70 season and he was later traded to Buffalo. He retired early in the 1971-72 season after playing eight games.
Duff worked as an assistant coach for the Maple Leafs for three seasons (1979-81), which included a two-game stint as head coach during the 1979-80 season. He was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
