Beaupre went from junior hockey to the Stanley Cup Final in one season.
The Minnesota North Stars selected Beaupre, a goalie for Sudbury of the Ontario Hockey League, in the second round (No. 37) of the 1980 NHL Draft. He made the team out of training camp, won his NHL debut against the Hartford Whalers on Oct. 11, 1980, and appeared in the 1981 NHL All-Star Game as a rookie. He and Gilles Meloche teamed to help the North Stars reach the Stanley Cup Final, and he earned Minnesota's lone victory in the five-game series against the New York Islanders.
But Beaupre found himself spending at least part of the next three seasons in the minors, and it wasn't until 1985-86 that he played in more than half of Minnesota's games. But he dropped to 17 wins in 1986-87 and 10 the following season before being traded to the Washington Capitals on Nov. 1, 1988.
After the trade, Beaupre spent most of the 1988-89 season with Baltimore, the Capitals' American Hockey League affiliate. But he was back in the NHL the following season, winning 23 games and helping Washington advance to the Wales Conference Final. Beaupre led the NHL with five shutouts in 1990-91 and was selected to play in the 1992 All-Star Game.
The Capitals traded Beaupre to the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 18, 1995. Though he blanked the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 on Feb. 6 for the first shutout in modern Senators history and finished with a 3.36 goals-against average, Beaupre was 8-25 with three ties. He went 6-23-0 in 1995-96 before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 23, 1996.
However, Beaupre went a combined 0-8-0 in 11 appearances with Toronto and retired after spending most of the 1996-97 with St. John's, Toronto's AHL affiliate. He finished his NHL career 268-277 with 75 ties, a 3.46 GAA, .885 save percentage and 17 shutouts in 666 games and was 33-31 with a 3.35 GAA, .888 save percentage and three shutouts in 72 playoff games.
