Barrasso is the only goalie to enter the NHL straight from high school, and he's arguably the best 18-year-old goalie in League history, as well as a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
The Buffalo Sabres selected Barrasso in the first round (No. 5) of the 1983 NHL Draft after he went 22-0 with one tie at Acton-Boxborough High School in Massachusetts. Not only did Barrasso make the Sabres, he was voted winner of the Vezina Trophy as the top goalie in the NHL and the Calder Trophy as best rookie after going 26-12 with three ties, a 2.85 goals-against average and .893 save percentage, third in the NHL among goalies who played at least half of their team's games.
Barrasso followed that by going 25-18 with 10 ties in 1984-85, when he was named an NHL Second-Team All-Star, and he helped the Sabres win the Jennings Trophy after allowing the fewest goals in the NHL in 1984-85. But his time with Buffalo ended Nov. 12, 1988, when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The addition of Barrasso gave the Penguins the kind of stability they hadn't had in years. They qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 1989, ending a six-season drought, and won the Stanley Cup for the first time two years later, with Barrasso in goal for the Cup-clinching 8-0 win against the Minnesota North Stars in Game 6 of the Final.
Barrasso was even better during the 1992 playoffs, earning all 16 wins to help the Penguins repeat as champions. He led the NHL with 43 wins in 1992-93, helping the Penguins win the Presidents' Trophy and tied an NHL record with 14 consecutive victories. However, their quest for a three-peat ended when the New York Islanders won Game 7 of the Patrick Division Final in overtime.
Injuries began to take a toll on Barrasso. He missed all but two games in 1994-95 with a wrist injury, bounced back with 29 wins in 1995-96, then was limited to five games in 1996-97 by a shoulder injury. But Barrasso rebounded again and became the first United States-born goalie in NHL history to win 300 games when he made 22 saves in a 4-1 win against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 19, 1997.
The Penguins traded Barrasso to the Ottawa Senators on March 24, 2000, and he also played for the Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues before signing a one-day contract with Pittsburgh so he could retire as a member of the Penguins on June 18, 2003. He finished 369-277 with 86 ties, a 3.24 GAA, .892 save percentage and 38 shutouts.
Barrasso was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.
