Dumba retires after 13 seasons in NHL

Defenseman spent most of career with Wild, played for Penguins in 2025-26

Mathew Dumba has retired after 13 NHL seasons.

The 32-year-old defenseman had three points (one goal, two assists) in 11 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, and 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 27 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, their American Hockey League affiliate.

Dumba was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the first round (No. 7) of the 2012 NHL Draft and played his first 10 seasons for them. He ranks in the top five all-time among Wild defenseman in games (598, fifth), goals (79, second), assists (157, fourth) and points (236, fourth).

"I'm done," Dumba told The Minnesota Star Tribune on Oct. 3 after delivering the "Let's play hockey" call before the Wild home opener that night. "I'm done. It was a good ride. But, yeah, just focusing on family now, and it's been really special."

Dumba also played for the Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars, finishing with 261 points (85 goals, 176 assists) in 748 games, and 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in 54 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Dumba also was voted winner of the King Clancey Memorial Trophy in 2020, awarded to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.
