Flames goalie Cooley really enjoys learning algebra in his free time

That's not a goal horn you hear, that's a nerd alert.

Calgary Flames goalie Devin Cooley was put on blast this week by his fiancée, Natalie Weyers, for an unusual hobby: algebra.

Weyers shared a video of herself approaching Cooley's desk and said "unfortunately, (Cooley) is never beating the 'goalies are weird' stereotype,' because what is he doing for fun right now?"

Weyers turned the camera on Cooley when she answered her own query: "Linear algebra! He bought a textbook. For linear algebra. And is doing it for fun!"

A laughing Cooley had no defense for the accusation live, but later defended himself in the comments.

"Figured I would add some context," Cooley responded. "The goal is to see how far I can go in math before my brain says that's enough haha. I dropped out of studying finance and computer science in college to play hockey and linear algebra is where I left off so that's where I'll start. Why am I doing this? I'm not really sure but I guess with how good AI is getting I don't want to lose the art of learning and creating. Plus it's a fun challenge!"

The comments were varied from teachers praising Cooley's drive to learn to some joking they never got over the trauma algebra caused them in their academic careers.

But for Cooley, the math is mathing. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Somebody get that netminder a pocket protector.
